Liposuction, sometimes called fat removal surgery, removes selected fat deposits through small incisions in the skin. A narrow surgical tube known as a cannula is inserted into the treatment area and used to loosen and remove fat through controlled suction.
The procedure is intended to improve body contours rather than produce substantial weight loss. The amount of fat that can be removed safely will depend on the treatment area, your health and the surgical approach recommended by your surgeon.
Liposuction can produce a lasting change to the treated area, but it does not prevent future weight gain. Remaining fat cells can still increase in size, and your body shape may also change due to ageing, pregnancy, or changes in weight. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle can help preserve your results.

Before surgery, the treatment areas are carefully marked and local anaesthetic is administered. Liposuction procedures at our Reigate clinic are carried out under local anaesthetic. If general anaesthetic is preferred or considered more appropriate following assessment, referral to a partner hospital or clinic can be arranged.
Small incisions are made so that a cannula can be inserted beneath the skin. The fat is loosened and removed through controlled suction, with your surgeon working carefully to reshape the treatment area.
The incisions are then closed or dressed as required. Although the incisions are usually small and positioned discreetly where possible, liposuction does leave scars. These will normally change and mature over time.
After surgery, you will be given instructions explaining how to look after the treated areas. A compression garment is commonly worn to support healing and help manage swelling.
