What is Nipple Reduction?

Nipple reduction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure aimed at reducing the size or length of the nipples to achieve a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing appearance. This procedure is commonly performed under local anesthesia and typically takes about an hour to complete.

Reasons to Have Nipple Reduction

There are various reasons why individuals may seek nipple reduction, including:
  • Aesthetic Concerns: Many people feel self-conscious about the size or length of their nipples, which can affect their confidence.
  • Clothing Comfort: Large or protruding nipples can make wearing certain types of clothing uncomfortable or unflattering.
  • Symmetry: Some individuals have asymmetrical nipples and seek surgery to achieve a more balanced appearance.
  • Post-Breastfeeding Changes: Nipples can change in size and shape after breastfeeding, prompting some to seek corrective surgery.

Benefits of Nipple Reduction

Nipple reduction offers several benefits, including:
  • Enhanced Appearance: Achieves a more proportionate and natural-looking breast.
  • Boosted Confidence: Helps improve self-esteem and body image.
  • Minimal Scarring: As a minimally invasive procedure, it leaves minimal scarring, which fades over time.
  • Quick Recovery: Patients can typically resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.

What the Nipple Reduction Involves

Consultation and Assessment:

During the nipple reduction procedure, your surgeon will begin by applying a local anesthetic to the treatment area. For nipple reduction, the surgeon will reduce the length of the nipple to make it more proportionate with the rest of the breast. The procedure involves precise incisions to remove excess tissue, followed by suturing to reshape the nipple. The entire process usually takes about one hour. For areola reduction, the surgeon will use a nipple marker to outline the desired areola size. A circular section of the skin will then be removed, and the surrounding breast skin will be sutured to the remaining areola tissue, achieving a tightened and aesthetically pleasing effect. This procedure is also performed under local anesthetic and takes about an hour.
