What is a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

A lymphatic drainage massage, also known as a Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), is a specialised form of massage which uses light, rhythmical, very precise hand movements retraining the lymph fluids to flow faster and efficiently from swollen areas. It is an effective way to greatly minimise side effects from surgery and radiotherapy. If you are thinking about MLD but don’t know a lot about what it involves, the benefits and how we provide this treatment then contact us at Harley Street Clinic Harpenden and Surrey.

Reasons to Have a Lymphatic Drainage Massage

A lymphatic massage aims to improve the flow of lymph fluid, which should reduce swelling. Massaging an area without swelling will make space for fluid to flow to those parts from more congested areas. Our qualified experts can perform a manual lymphatic drainage knowing exactly which area to massage and how much pressure to use. This treatment is only recommended for patients that might have built-up fluid after surgery or radiotherapy.

Benefits of a Lymphatic Drainage Massage

There are many clinically proven effects and benefits are of having a Lymphatic Drainage Massage as listed below:
  • Offers Anti-Fibrotic and Anti-Inflammatory results
  • Detoxifying effect
  • Improvement of muscle tone, mobility, tissue quality, and trophicity
  • Reduction in bruising, seroma, haematoma, oedema, skin irritation and scarring
  • Significant reduction in post-surgery pain
  • Relaxation of muscles and stimulation of a dynamic wound healing

What the Treatment Involves

To provide a lymphatic drainage massage we use the manual method of a light pressure to mobilise the lymphatic system, which lies directly beneath the skin. MLD follows a specific sequence, starting with the main drains in the body, including the lymph nodes in the neck, groin and armpits. Light movements stimulate your lymphatic system without pressing hard on your vessels. The idea is that by massaging an area where there is no swelling, the congested lymph fluid will have somewhere to go because you’ve created space for it. The treatment can last up to one and half hour depending of the area treated and you can see lasting results for around 10 days. If you require any more information, feel free to contact our team.
