Age spots, also known as Liver spots, are very common on the hands and face. They are caused by an accumulation of a yellow pigment called lipofuscin from the ageing of the collagen producing cells. Age Spots are small dark patches which often show up in places that get lots of sun, like your face, hands, shoulders, and arms. They're more common if you're over 50, but you can get them if you're younger and spend a lot of time in the sun. These spots can effectively be removed with the method of Diathermy. Diathermy, also known as Thermolysis, works by using an Alternating Current (AC) of electricity. The electricity causes the water molecules in the skin around the needle to vibrate, which creates heat. If enough heat is produced, it can damage the cells that it is targeting. When skin grows back after Thermolysis treatments, it triggers the production of collagen and elastin. This can help make your skin supple and strong, reducing the appearance of wrinkles/lines and imperfections like age spots. These Age spots vary in size and colour. The new skin that grows back is also smoother, which helps decrease roughness. Most age spots, once removed will leave virtually no sign of their original presence on the skin’s surface.
Your skin will be cleansed to remove any oils or dirt on the skin's surface. Your eyes will be covered with goggles and hair protected. A handheld device will pass a electric current against your skin/treatment area. You may feel the flick of an elastic band against your skin. The discomfort varies with the sensitivity of the area being treated. The treated area will sting for a while afterwards and a dark purple scab will form and last for about two weeks. Some pinkness of the treated area will persist for several weeks. The treatment has a permanent effect, however additional treatments may be needed if there is new growth in the same area.
