Mini Abdominoplasty

mini tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a procedure designed to improve the contour of the abdomen. In terms of nomenclature, a full tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, releases the umbilicus, whereas a mini-tummy tuck does not; it only addresses the lower half of the abdomen, and as such, it is only suitable for a select group of patients.

The scar runs from hip to hip and is well hidden in underwear and swimwear. It is often combined with liposuction to improve the contour of the rest of the anterior abdomen.

It takes around an hour and a half to two hours, sometimes as a day case, sometimes as a one-night stay in hospital. However, ultimately, assessment of the patient is key to determining what is best for them.

If you are thinking about this procedure, but don’t know a lot about what it involves, the benefits and how we provide this treatment please contact Harley Street Clinic Surrey or Harpenden.

What is Mini Abdominoplasty?

Mini Abdominoplasty or mini-tummy tucks (apronectomies) are a surgical procedure performed using local anaesthetic which aim to remove excess stubborn fatty tissue and excess skin of the abdominal area. This differs from a full tummy tuck and is useful in patients with overhanging skin. This treatment is often be combined with liposuction to help with overall contouring of the abdomen. It is common for women to seek abdominoplasty after having children or losing weight, as these life events can make them feel they have stubborn fat and excess skin around their abdomen. However, this procedure is available to all individuals age 18 and above.

Reasons to Have Mini Abdominoplasty

One of the main reasons patients choose to undergo this procedure are those who might be concerned about stubborn excess fat and loose skin in their body that they are unable to improve through diet and exercise. Other reasons could be a desire to contour your body or regain your pre-pregnancy body or a boost in confidence. Quality of life is often improved when you feel your absolute best.

If you would like to improve your body shape because of skin laxity and excess fat in your lower abdomen, which does not reduce with good diet and exercise, do not have any serious medical conditions, and are not significantly overweight, then a Mini Abdominoplasty, the tummy tuck is likely to be suitable for you.

Benefits of Mini Abdominoplasty

The main benefit of a Mini Abdominoplasty surgery is that it can reduce the heavy lower abdomen and hips to enable you to wear the clothes you want and boost your self-esteem. However, other benefits are as follows:

  • Regain your body shape post-baby!
  • Restore a youthful figure.
  • Create a flat lower abdomen with no loose skin.
  • A mini abdominoplasty is less invasive than a full Tummy Tuck
  • Shorter recovery time than a full abdominoplasty.
  • Diabetic patients may benefit by improved blood sugar control or reduced requirements for medication.
  • Boost in your self-confidence.
  • Comfort enabling you to exercise effectively to maintain good body weight and shape.
  • Strengthens your core.
  • Minimise the risk of other medical conditions.
  • Improved control over bodily functions.
  • Body contouring

Mini Abdominoplasty Before and After

What the Treatment Involves

A mini tummy tuck is performed at our Reigate Theatre's. During a mini tummy tuck, local anesthetic will be used. There is an element of risk in any operation, but when performed by a highly qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon these risks are minimised. Your surgeon will make a small incision just above the pubic region or if you have a caesarean scar, the incision will be made a few centimeters below it. The surgeon will then excise a football-shaped mound of excess skin, which will include your caesarean scar if present. After the incision has been made and the excess skin has been excised, your surgeon will close the incision using dissolvable sutures to avoid the hassle of having the stitches removed.
Mild to Moderate pain or discomfort is expected for 3 to 5 days. Patients can go back to their normal daily activities after 3 days, but avoid strenuous exercise or activity for 6 weeks. It will be necessary to wear a support garment for the first 3 weeks, day and night, and the second 3 weeks during the day. The majority of swelling will resolve in 3 to 4 weeks but it may take up to 3 months to return to normal. Maintaining a healthy diet will help you during your recovery and aftercare. Try to eat high-protein, low-sodium foods including lots of vegetables and fruits. Hydrate your body well by drinking lots of water and avoiding drinks with high caffeine. Combined with staying active and working out will be also help keep the results from the surgery.
