Female Hair Transplant

Hair loss is a common issue that affects both men and women, though it can be especially distressing for women. At Harley Street Clinic Harpenden & Surrey, we understand the sensitivity surrounding hair loss and the profound impact it can have on confidence and mental health. While hair transplant procedures are more commonly performed on men, they are steadily increasing in popularity among women.

Understanding Female Hair Loss

It is reported that one in three women will experience hair loss at some point in their lives. The causes of female hair loss are varied and can include:
  • Menopause
  • Pregnancy
  • Medication
  • Over-styling
  • Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia)
Female pattern baldness is classified using the Ludwig system and, although it is not curable, there are treatments available that can slow and restore hair loss. In most cases, female hair loss is not permanent, and many women see regrowth with lifestyle changes, medication, and non-surgical treatments. However, in some cases, a hair transplant may be the best solution. This decision is typically made after consulting with a trichologist who can identify the cause of hair loss and advise whether restoration surgery is a viable option.

What is a Female Hair Transplant?

A female hair transplant is a specialised procedure tailored to the unique needs of women. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE):
  • The back of the head is shaved.
  • Individual hairs are removed one by one (grafts).
  • Grafts are placed into tiny cuts in the scalp.
  • The donor area will have many tiny scars, but they are not very noticeable.
Benefits of Female Hair Transplant
  • Increased Confidence: Enhance hair volume and density to create a youthful appearance and boost confidence.
  • Low Maintenance: Offers a long-term solution to hair loss with minimal upkeep.
  • Permanent Results: Both FUE and FUT methods provide lasting results, with transplanted hair continuing to grow for a lifetime.
  • Natural Look: The results are natural, as the transplanted hair is your own, relocated from another area.
  • Cost-Effective: Typically requires a one-time payment, with no ongoing costs for upkeep once the new hair has grown.

What the Treatment Involves

During your consultation, we will discuss and decide upon your new hairline. The surgeon will mark your scalp and answer any questions you may have. Local anaesthetic is applied to numb the scalp, ensuring a pain-free procedure. Individual hair follicles containing 1 to 4 hairs are extracted from the sides and back of the head using a micro extraction instrument. Tiny holes are made in the balding area, and the hairs are placed at the correct angle to mimic the natural appearance of your hair. Post-procedure, you may experience minor soreness and numbness. The transplanted hair will shed after a few weeks but will grow back strong and healthy, behaving like your original hair.
